Tents crowd the grounds of Portsmouth Square in this c1906 view of the Hall of Justice, a sign of how the 1906 earthquake and fire pushed city offices and residents into makeshift shelter. The square, one of the city's oldest public spaces, served as an open refuge after the disaster, and the Hall of Justice itself was among the public buildings damaged in the fires that followed. The image is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American towns and landscapes made in the early twentieth century.
