Portsmouth Square was the plaza at the center of early San Francisco, and in July 1846 Captain John Montgomery raised the American flag over it when U.S. forces took the settlement. Through the gold rush years it remained a gathering place for merchants, newcomers and idlers. This view is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, published around 1866, and only this half is held by the Library of Congress. Stereographs like this were viewed through a lens for a three-dimensional effect, bringing the square into parlors far from California.
