This half of a stereograph shows City Hall and its plaza in San Francisco, a civic space in a city still shaping its institutions a decade and a half after the Gold Rush brought its rapid growth. The print is an albumen photograph from the 1860s, a process that gave these views their warm brown tones. It was issued as number 205 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and viewers would have seen the two slightly offset images through a stereoscope, which merged them into a single scene with depth. Many of the city's public buildings were lost in the 1906 earthquake and fire, so views like this one document a downtown that no longer exists in that form.
