This view of the steamship Golden City in San Francisco is one half of a stereograph pair, and the Library holds only that single print. Its caption card places it in the series *Gems of California Scenery* as number 312, and the date of 1866 is a publication estimate. In the 1860s San Francisco's waterfront was among the busiest on the Pacific coast, with steamers, sailing ships, and river boats moving passengers and freight in and out of the bay. Stereographs like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the ship's hull and rigging a sense of depth that a flat print could not.
