Mayor Eugene Schmitz is the focus of this stereograph, shown making his rounds through a city still reeling from the earthquake of April 18, 1906. The caption praises his "untiring labors" to relieve San Francisco, and the automobile tracing on the card suggests he moved through the damaged streets by motor car. Fires that followed the quake burned much of the city over the next several days, leaving many thousands homeless, so the mayor's visible presence became a symbol of civic response. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereo views, issued the card for home viewers eager for news of the disaster.
