Only one group left San Francisco for the Santa Anita Assembly Center, and this photograph records their departure. On April 6, 1942, evacuees of Japanese ancestry boarded motor coaches bound for a railroad station, the first leg of a trip south to the former racetrack in Arcadia, California. Following Executive Order 9066, signed in February 1942, the army moved people of Japanese descent from the West Coast, and Santa Anita, where families were housed in converted horse stalls, served as a temporary stop before the inland camps.
