Issued from Currier & Ives's New York shop in 1877, this lithograph presents San Francisco as a city that had grown quickly after the transcontinental railroad linked it to the East in 1869. The firm produced many city views for buyers who would never see the places themselves, so the picture works partly as a flattering portrait of a booming Pacific port. The date falls in a turbulent stretch for the city, when labor agitation and anti-Chinese sentiment ran strong in its streets. Viewers interested in the period can read the print for how the town was laid out across its hills and along the bay.
