Military police escort a family from a control station toward a waiting bus, the first leg of their trip to the train depot in San Francisco in 1942. Under Executive Order 9066, signed in February 1942, the Army removed people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast, and control stations like this one processed residents before they were moved to temporary assembly centers and then to inland camps. The Signal Corps, the Army's communications branch, made the picture as part of its documentation of the removal. Images like this one show how orderly and tightly managed the process was, while families experienced it as the sudden loss of homes, businesses and schooling.
