Arriving at the Tanforan racetrack in San Bruno on May 11, 1942, this group of San Francisco evacuees sorts through their luggage as they reach the assembly center. Tanforan held Japanese Americans from the Bay Area after Executive Order 9066 authorized their removal from the West Coast that February. Families were housed in converted horse stalls on the track grounds before being moved to longer-term camps inland. The scene shows how quickly people had to decide what to carry with them.
