The center section of this five-part panorama captures San Francisco around 1905, roughly a year before the April 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed much of the city's downtown and many of its neighborhoods. Joined with its four companion sections, the full view would have offered a continuous sweep across the city's steep hills and dense streets, something a single exposure could not easily capture. Panoramas like this were popular for showing a city's growth and scale, and today they serve as a detailed record of San Francisco just before its rebuilding.
