San Francisco's waterfront was the working heart of the city around 1900, and this view shows the wharf at a time when ships, cargo and dockside labor defined daily life along the bay. The record dates the print to about 1900 and December, which places it in the years when the port was handling a steady flow of lumber, grain and goods bound for markets across the Pacific and along the coast. Wharf photographs of this era were often commissioned or sold as souvenirs, so they capture both commerce and the city's growing reputation as a Western gateway. Look closely at the rigging, pilings and people along the edge for details of how the waterfront operated before the 1906 earthquake reshaped much of the city.
