The caption and the scene pull against each other: a notice and a row of tents present a camp of earthquake refugees as a place of "fun making," which gives this stereograph its particular irony. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereo views in large numbers, issued the card in 1906, a few months after the earthquake and fire of April 18 left much of San Francisco homeless. Tent camps spread across the city's parks and open spaces during those months, and the light tone of this view may have suited buyers far from the damage.
