Fishermen's Wharf in San Francisco was already a working waterfront by about 1901, when the Detroit Publishing Company turned its camera on the docks and the boats tied up along them. The company, based in Detroit, produced a huge catalog of views of American cities, landscapes and industry, sold as photochrom and other prints to travelers and buyers who wanted a picture of the country. This example carries the company's number 014040 on its caption card, and its record notes that no original negative survives, so the print stands as one of the few direct records of the scene. Look at the boats and the crowded shoreline to see how fishing and trade shaped the city's edge at the turn of the century.
