Few pictures in the gallery show a working steamer as plainly as this one, which records the Honolulu steamer Ajax unloading cargo at the Greenwich Street wharf in San Francisco. In the 1860s San Francisco was one of the busiest ports on the Pacific coast, and steamers from Honolulu and other Pacific ports brought goods, passengers and mail into its bay. The view is one half of a stereograph, meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth, and it was issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. The Library holds only this half of the pair, and the caption data attached to the record is unverified, so the exact date should be read with that in mind.
