Few views of the city's waterfront capture the bustle of a ship's arrival as directly as this one, which its title, "Steamer day in San Francisco," places at the wharves. By the mid-1860s, steamers of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and other lines carried mail, news, and passengers up the coast and across from Panama, so the docks were busiest whenever a steamer came in. The print is dated to about 1866, but that date and the name L. Nagel, noted on an older catalog card, have not been verified, so the maker remains uncertain. It still offers a useful glimpse of the port in the years after the Gold Rush, when shipping set much of the city's daily rhythm.
