Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who had lived in San Francisco for more than a decade, is credited with this print of the city after the 1906 earthquake. The catalog details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the exact location and timing of the view should be read with some caution. The quake struck on April 18, and the fires that followed destroyed much of the city. Genthe later became better known for his portraits, but his street scenes from that period remain widely studied records of the disaster.
