Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who worked in San Francisco, is credited with this view of the city in the aftermath of the April 18, 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed. The fires burned for several days and destroyed much of the city's core, reducing neighborhoods of wood and brick to rubble. Genthe's pictures from this period are prized for capturing streets and people during the disaster, though the caption information for this print is old and has not been independently verified.
