A London chromolithograph by the firm of M. & N. Hanhart, this view bears the signature "S.F. Marryat, delt.," with "delt." short for *delineavit*, meaning the artist drew the original scene. The color was built up from several stones, each inked in a different hue, a process the Hanhart firm used to imitate watercolor. The record dates the print to about 1850, when San Francisco was growing rapidly after the Gold Rush. The Library holds two impressions, one hand-colored, so you can compare the printed color with the touches added by hand.
