Drawn by S.F. Marryat and printed in London by the Hanhart firm, this chromolithograph presents San Francisco in the years around the Gold Rush, when the settlement grew from a small Mexican-era town into a busy port within a few short years. Hanhart's color lithography was prized in the mid-nineteenth century for bringing views of distant places to European audiences, so the print shows how the new American city was imagined from across the Atlantic. The Library holds two impressions, one hand-colored, which makes it possible to compare the printed color with the work of individual colorists.
