Taken from California Street, this albumen print was deposited for copyright by Eadweard Muybridge on August 11, 1877, and issued under the Morse's Gallery imprint in San Francisco. A key inscribed on the front, signed by Muybridge, helped viewers identify the streets, rooftops and hills across a wide city view. Muybridge was among the best-known photographers working in San Francisco in the 1870s, and his panoramas helped shape how the growing city was pictured for residents and visitors. The title also credits Hill, so the picture reflects a joint photographic credit as well as Muybridge's own work.
