San Francisco in the 1870s was a boomtown built on Gold Rush fortunes, and this engraving captures that rapid growth in its streets and buildings. Published by Frederick Hess around 1874, the print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a sign that it was issued for sale to a wide public. Views like this one were popular in the decade because they offered residents and distant buyers a fixed record of a city that was changing faster than almost anyone could keep up with.
