Portsmouth Square, the central open space of early San Francisco, appears in this half-plate daguerreotype made before June 22, 1851. Legible signs on the storefronts, including California Restaurant, Book and Job Printing, and Alta California, the name of a local newspaper, point to the commercial life that grew around the plaza. The plate records a town still being built up in the years after the 1849 gold rush, when people arrived far faster than buildings could rise to house them.
