Few places in the city look as the Japanese Tea Garden does in this view of Golden Gate Park, with its curving paths, arched bridges, and carefully shaped plantings. The garden began as a Japanese village exhibit at the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894, and it stayed in the park after the fair closed. Later it was tended by the Hagiwara family, who expanded it into the landscape visitors know today. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one as commercial prints, so the picture also reflects how the park was marketed to tourists in the early 1900s.
