Only one half of this stereograph pair is held by the Library, showing the West End Hotel on the Plaza in San Francisco as number 204 in the Gems of California Scenery series. The square was the old heart of the town when it was called Yerba Buena, and by the 1860s it was surrounded by hotels and business blocks. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical photographs merged into one image with depth, a popular parlor pastime of the period. The 1866 date comes from an old caption card and is unverified.
