From the roof of the Ferry Building post office at the foot of Market Street, this panorama looks out over a San Francisco shaped by the April 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its large-format views of American towns and landscapes, issued the image, and its catalog tag indicates that the subject is earthquake damage. The Ferry Building was one of the city's main waterfront landmarks, so a vantage point there offered a sweeping view of the waterfront and the surrounding streets. Viewers today can compare the scene with later photographs to see how the city was rebuilt.
