Only the stone shell of the Flood Mansion remains on Nob Hill in this view, its windows empty and its interior gutted. James Clair Flood, one of the Comstock silver magnates whose fortunes built much of the hill's grand housing, had the house built in the 1880s. The April 1906 earthquake and the fires that followed destroyed many of the mansions on Nob Hill, and this photograph records the aftermath. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its wide survey of American places, made the glass negative around that time.
