The Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street was the city's main gateway for commuters crossing San Francisco Bay, and its clock tower made it a landmark for arrivals by water. The building stood through the April 1906 earthquake with comparatively little structural damage, while fires swept much of the nearby waterfront, a contrast that makes views from this period especially worth a closer look. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American cities and scenery, sold images like this one widely, so the picture also reflects how the rebuilding-era city was presented to outside audiences.
