Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street was the main gateway for commuters arriving by boat across San Francisco Bay, and its clock tower made it a landmark on the waterfront. The building opened in the late 1890s and came through the 1906 earthquake and fire with relatively little damage, which helped it become a symbol of the city's recovery. This 1907 to 1908 view belongs to a group of early twentieth-century prints showing the port and its marine terminals, a record of a period when ferries carried most daily travel across the bay.
