Two commercial landmarks stand side by side in this view of San Francisco's downtown, the Examiner Building and the Claus Spreckels Building, as the title dates them to 1898. The Examiner was William Randolph Hearst's newspaper, and in the 1890s it helped make the city's Market Street corridor a center of publishing and business. The Spreckels building was named for the sugar magnate whose fortune had grown from West Coast refining. The print itself is a later record: its caption card credits George M. Rascoe of San Francisco, and the Library of Congress dates the copyright registration to about 1947, so the image shows the district as it was recorded then.
