Ship building at South Beach, on San Francisco's eastern waterfront, shows a working shoreline in the years after the Gold Rush, when the city's harbor handled a steady stream of coastal and Pacific trade. Shipyards there built and repaired vessels to meet that demand. The print is one half of a stereograph from the *Gems of California* series, numbered 332 on its caption card and dated 1866 in the record, though those details are unverified. Only this half of the pair survives in the Library's holdings, so the three-dimensional effect of the original viewer is lost, but the albumen print still records the timber, rigging and yard work.
