The Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street is the landmark this stereograph is pinned to, and its title promises a scene of firefighting under a smoke-darkened sky. The photograph was taken in April 1906, in the days after the earthquake of April 18 set off fires that burned across much of the city for three days. Firefighters had little water because broken mains left hydrants dry, so crews often relied on dynamite to halt the flames. The card was copyrighted by Charles L. Wasson, a San Francisco photographer who sold views of the ruin, and it was later shown in a 2006 exhibition on the disaster.
