Market Street, the diagonal artery that cuts across San Francisco from the Ferry Building toward the western neighborhoods, is the subject here, and this view looks straight down its length as it ran through the commercial heart of the city in the mid-1930s. Gabriel Moulin, a photographer who documented the Bay Area, made the picture, and its copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office reflects the period's habit of protecting commercial photographs. The street was then lined with department stores, theaters and office buildings, and the view shows the bustle of a downtown that was recovering from the Depression while the city prepared for its Bay Bridge and World's Fair era.
