This view singles out the Fairmont Hotel, which crowns Nob Hill at the corner of California and Mason streets, rising above the grid of streets and rooftops below. The hotel was built by the Fair family estate, and its construction was delayed when the 1906 earthquake and fire devastated the city, so it did not open until 1907. By about 1920, when this print was made, the Fairmont had become one of the city's best-known landmarks, and the surrounding blocks of Nob Hill still held many of the grand residences that had made the hill fashionable. The photographer's elevated angle makes the hotel's position clear against the city's street pattern.
