Few images capture the Pan American flying boat *Philippine Clipper*, a Martin M-130, against the new span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Pan American's M-130s opened the trans-Pacific air route from San Francisco in 1935, carrying mail and a small number of passengers on a slow, island-hopping path to Manila. The bridge, completed in 1936, linked the two cities and reshaped Bay Area travel. Seeing the two machines of that moment in one frame, a flying boat over a bridge that was then the region's newest engineering marvel, makes the picture a useful record of the decade's transport ambitions.
