The China Clipper, Pan American Airways' four-engine flying boat, rides in the foreground while Alcatraz Island sits behind it on San Francisco Bay. Built as a Martin M-130, the aircraft began carrying transpacific airmail in November 1935, flying from Alameda by way of Hawaii, Midway, Wake, and Guam toward Manila. Oakland photographer Clyde Sunderland, who registered the image for copyright, pairs that new long-distance machine with a landmark that was then a federal penitentiary.
