A single schooner under full sail moves past a small island, a scene that would have been a familiar sight to anyone traveling the waters around San Francisco. In the 19th century, schooners carried lumber, grain and goods along the Pacific coast, and islands such as Alcatraz and Angel Island served as landmarks for vessels entering the Bay. Many prints of this period were colored by hand after printing, so the sails and water in this image show the touch of an artist's brush rather than a uniform mechanical tone.
