From a vantage point on Goat Island, now called Yerba Buena Island, the photographer looks out at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge at a moment when it was nearly finished. The island sits midway across the bay, and the bridge's two sections meet there, with the eastern span running through a tunnel bored into the island. The bridge opened to traffic in November 1936, so the picture captures the structure during the final years of its construction. Its steel towers and long spans show the scale of a project that changed how people crossed the bay.
