Rather than a view of the city's streets or waterfront, this print is a study of light: a sunset over San Francisco Bay, recorded around 1884. Its mount bears the stamp of George Fiske, a photographer better known for his Yosemite Valley views, and the San Francisco agency Sanborn, Vail & Co., which sold photographs from its Market Street address. Fiske registered the image for copyright, so it was made for sale and circulation. Late nineteenth-century photographers often pictured sunsets and open water as subjects in their own right, which makes this print a useful record of how the bay was seen and marketed in that decade.
