Two stern-wheel steamers, the Sacramento and the Oakland, fill this half of a stereograph made at San Francisco, and together they show the bay's working waterfront in the mid-1860s. Boats like these carried passengers and freight across San Francisco Bay and up the Sacramento River, linking the city to the farming valleys and the Gold Rush towns before the railroads took over much of that traffic. The view comes from the Gems of California Scenery series, a commercial line of photographs meant for viewers eager to see the new state's cities and harbors.
