The Baldwin Hotel rose on Market Street in San Francisco in the 1870s, built by Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, a financier whose fortune came from mining stock and land speculation in the years after the Comstock silver boom. It was among the city's most lavish hostelries of its day, drawing travelers, theatergoers and the city's wealthy, and it stood beside the theater Baldwin also owned. The building's ornate public spaces reflected the confidence of a city that had grown quickly on silver and gold. Its story is also a window into the boom-era Market Street district, which was then the center of the city's commercial and social life.
