Howard Street, between Second and Third Streets, shows a single block of the growing city, a stretch of the South of Market district. The print is one half of a stereographic pair, the kind of card viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect, and it belongs to the *Gems of California Scenery* series. By 1866, San Francisco had expanded rapidly since the Gold Rush, and albumen prints like this one were a popular way for residents and distant buyers to see the changing town. The catalog also lists churches and synagogues as a subject, but that note is unverified and should be checked against the image itself.
