Dupont Street, the thoroughfare later renamed Grant Avenue, is the setting for this 1866 stereograph of Chinese mercantile houses in San Francisco. By the 1860s the street ran through the heart of the city's growing Chinese quarter, where merchants ran import shops, provision stores, and offices serving the community. This print is the left half of a stereo pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the Library holds only this one image. Because stereographs were viewed through a hand-held viewer to create a three-dimensional effect, the paired images are the key to the original experience. The caption data comes from an old card and has not been fully verified.
