Few domestic interiors from 1860s San Francisco survive in photographs, which makes this view of the picture gallery in R.B. Woodward's residence unusual. It is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, number 424, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the two images merged into a sense of depth. The albumen print, published in 1866, shows a room whose walls are filled with framed works, as the title suggests, in a format typical of parlor card views of the period. It offers a glimpse of how prosperous city households displayed their collections in the years after the Gold Rush.
