A trotting deer caught mid-stride sets this print apart from the horses that dominate Muybridge's Palo Alto series. It comes from *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book Muybridge copyrighted in 1881 that gathered sequences shot at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879. Those sessions grew out of Leland Stanford's question about whether a horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once, and Muybridge answered it with rows of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads across the track. Here the same method turns to a wild animal, freezing a pose that the eye could not resolve at the time.
