Unlike the horse studies that made Muybridge famous, this print shows a deer running, one of the animal subjects he photographed at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879. It is numbered 86 in his 1881 book, *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it appears in a sequence of consecutive positions. Muybridge worked on Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property, and his camera setups, triggered by tripwires, broke a single movement into a row of separate frames. The series gave artists and scientists a new way to see how bodies move, and it remains a landmark in early motion study.
