Among Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto studies, this print shows a goat in mid-stride. It appears as plate 88 in his book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. Muybridge worked in 1878 and 1879 with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track, breaking motion into successive frames too brief for the eye to follow. The project began with Leland Stanford's question about whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground, and the goat was one of many animals studied to extend that inquiry. Copyrighted in 1881, the print is an early example of motion photography.
