Among Eadweard Muybridge's studies of animals in motion, this one shows a bull at a run, its body captured in a irregular sequence of positions that reveal how its legs actually move. The photograph was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge set up a row of cameras along a track to photograph horses and other animals in motion. It was later published as plate 82 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* and copyrighted in 1881, a year in which his work was circulating widely. Muybridge's images helped settle long-running arguments about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once, and they remain important early examples of motion photography.
