Few animals in Eadweard Muybridge's sequence studies were as unexpected as an ox, and this print shows one at a run, its legs caught in an irregular gait rather than a neat stride. The photograph comes from The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, a series Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 and published as a book in 1881, the year this print is dated. He worked with a row of cameras fired by tripwires along a track, so each frame recorded a fraction of a second of movement. Prints like this one, numbered in the book's index, helped settle long-running questions about how four-legged animals actually move.
