Among the animal studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, California, this print shows a deer caught mid-run. It is one of the plates in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where he gathered sequences of photographs from the late 1870s. He made the pictures with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the ground, a method that could freeze movements too quick for the eye. The Palo Alto work grew out of his earlier motion studies for Leland Stanford, and the albumen print shows how a fleeting gait could be broken into positions that could be compared side by side.
