Among the animal studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, this albumen print shows a deer caught mid-stride, listed as no. 87 in the plates of his book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*. He made the series in 1878 and 1879 on the grounds of Leland Stanford's Palo Alto farm, using a row of cameras that were triggered as the animal passed. Published under an 1881 copyright, the consecutive positions let viewers study a gait the eye could not easily separate into parts. Muybridge's work is often cited as an early step toward motion pictures.
